Camera expert / Videographer 60%, Zurich, temporary (at least for 3 months)

The new Unit for Teaching and Learning, UTL at ETH Zürich initiates and leads ETH-wide initiatives for strategic teaching development, co-designs the development of cutting-edge media and tech, supports curriculum design, and offers support and inspiration to lecturers for the design of their teaching activities. The Media & Methods Lab (former Edumedia team) is part of the UTL at ETH Zurich. The MML team crafts media that bridge education and science, collaborating closely with professors and lecturers at ETH Zurich. Operating at the crossroads of art, innovation, and science, the team works in co-design to develop a wide array of media including videos, comics, animations, podcasts, GIFs, and new media like VR – and potentially AR in the future. The team consists of interdisciplinary experts in graphic design, science visualization, animation, camera work, editing, UX design, and media studies.

Job description
We're in search of a temporary talented, professional and experienced videographer / camera person for several co-design media productions. You will work on video projects with different topics, always in cooperation with our ETH content experts, such as e.g:

  • filming animal behavior e.g. of pigs, cows, chicken etc. on different Swiss farms (spending time on many days on different farms)

  • preproduction, film production and postproduction of interactive video about urban landslides in different areas of Switzerland

  • videographical documentations of soil profile excavations and conducting on-location expert interviews in the mountains

  • creating high-quality expert statements for different video and animation-based educational productions

  • postproduction of full-length peace mediation settings

  • support the teachings of videography for students and junior scientists

  • video installations in our MML space for events

  • set-up film sets in our MML space

  • organize and keep order with all the team film material

Your primary duty will revolve around translating complex scientific educational ideas accessible and engaging through videography together with our team and the ETH’s content experts. Further, you will be part of project teams helping to decide on new script, storytelling and translation processes for the educational media productions – always ensuring to include the perspective of professional audiovisual theory and practices. As the videographer in productions, you'll ensure smooth project workflows between your material and the other involced professional media designers, lecturers and students.

Your profile

  • B.A. or Master's degree in Applied Film, Video or Audiovisual Media

  • Min. three years of work experience, preferably working on the intersection of science, education and film

  • Experience in executing media productions in the field (field work, different scenarios and project partners). Bonus: camera field work in developing countries or similar

  • High technical knowledge in handling professional video equipment

  • Curiosity and interest in working across the STEM heavy ETH curriculum

  • Profound appreciation for storytelling and narratology for audiovisual media.

  • Very good analytical thinking of image-word combinations, audiovisual rhetorics.

  • Strong aptitude for creativity and teamwork on the intersection of science and education

  • A methodical approach to work, combined with self-motivation, high flexibility and resilience, including physical endurance in camera field work

  • Fluent in English and German (written and verbal)

  • Experience in science communication

  • Genuine curiosity about current trends in technology, media, and science

  • Successful grant proposal writing

  • Teaching experience

  • Experience with Generative-AI
