Integrating videos into lessons, presenting a thesis on video, or assigning video projects to students are known to be effective ways to teach and connect with other academics – and simultaneously learning about and passing on media skills. The role of videos in academia is thus becoming more and more important, all the while videos are becoming standard practice in many academic realms; for example, many publishers now ask for an abstract on video instead of on paper. However, the production of such academic/educational videos still poses a challenge for many. A common misconception is that creating professional videos requires expensive and complicated equipment. The on-smartphone videography will share the best practices on the technical aspects of recording a video using only a smartphone. It focuses on smartphone settings, touches on the peculiarities of indoor and outdoor lighting, camera movements, and introduces what additional gear or apps could be used.
